Who can resist the allure of a perfectly crafted ham and cheese sandwich? Now, imagine that classic elevated to gourmet status: featuring savory Canadian Bacon, creamy Havarti cheese, and a rich, buttery pesto glaze, all baked until hot, melty, and utterly irresistible. These Canadian Bacon & Havarti Sliders aren’t just an appetizer; they’re a revelation, perfect for lunch, dinner, or your next gathering. Prepare to fall in love with your new favorite go-to dish!

The other day, my dear mom came over to visit. She drives two hours every Thursday, a testament to her amazing spirit and our bond. While we were catching up, she noticed two copies of the same book sitting on the table. “Why do you have two copies of the same book? Are they gifts?” she inquired.

My immediate thought was, “Yes, one is for you for Mother’s Day!” But instead of blurting out the surprise, I mumbled something about needing to use the bathroom and made a swift exit. Later that day, she mentioned her own Mother’s Day gift plans, declaring books were “kind of a lame Mother’s Day present” and she could “do better than that.” My secret gift plan suddenly felt a little less brilliant. It’s a constant, playful battle for “favorite child” status among us five siblings, though I’m convinced I’ve got it in the bag (and I’m sure my siblings think the same!). It just goes to show how truly amazing my mom is. Speaking of gifts, here’s a fun mug my sister Nikki recently got her:

This little Mother’s Day mishap highlights a classic “Karen and Eric” moment. We’d bought two copies of the book at Target for our respective mothers. We hadn’t even read it yet, but we loved the movie adaptation, and my book club raved about the novel. Yes, we’re those “annoying people” who sometimes recommend things without personal experience, a bit like those who avoid gluten because “someone in their yoga class told them to.”

Being the responsible adults we are, we then completely forgot to mail Eric’s mom her copy in Montana. To avoid being late, Eric quickly bought it on Kindle and sent it digitally for Mother’s Day. So, in total, three books were purchased, but zero were read by us! At least we now have our own copy to get to eventually. Happy Mother’s Day anyway, Mom! Next year, I promise to get you something much cooler and redeem my “favorite child” status. I’m sure my mom (Janice) will comment below, “I love books! This looks like a really good one! I love all my children equally!” She’s truly the best.

Irresistible Canadian Bacon & Havarti Sliders with Buttery Pesto Glaze
The Ultimate Party Appetizer or Easy Meal
Who doesn’t love the concept of sliders? (And seriously, who actually knows why they’re called sliders?) These mini hot sandwiches are universally loved, but these Canadian Bacon and Havarti ones truly steal the show. They are packed with so much cheesy, savory flavor that they’re guaranteed to be a hit. The secret lies in the decadent buttery pesto glaze – a full stick of butter blended with aromatic pesto, drizzled generously over the top, then baked to crispy-cheesy perfection. It’s a dish so good, you might forget about balanced diets, opting instead for pure, unadulterated cheesy, buttery bliss!

^^Just look at that crispy cheese skirt peeking out from the bottom! Pure YUM.
These sliders are not only incredibly delicious but also fantastically easy to make, making them an ideal appetizer or side dish for summer BBQs, game nights, or any casual get-together. The simple assembly involves splitting a package of rolls, layering with creamy mayonnaise, savory ham, and gooey cheese, then topping it all with a simple five-ingredient sauce before baking. It’s a fuss-free recipe that delivers maximum flavor with minimal effort.
Why You’ll Fall in Love with These Sliders
These aren’t your average ham and cheese sliders; they’re an experience! Here’s why they’ll quickly become a household favorite:
- **Gourmet Upgrade:** Canadian bacon offers a leaner, yet equally flavorful alternative to traditional ham, while Havarti cheese provides an unparalleled creamy, buttery melt that’s simply divine.
- **Irresistible Pesto Glaze:** The pesto-infused buttery glaze takes these sliders over the top. It soaks into the rolls, creating a wonderfully moist interior, while buttering the tops to a golden, crisp finish.
- **Crispy Cheese Skirt:** As the cheese melts and spills over the edges, it caramelizes on the baking sheet, forming a delicious, crispy “skirt” that adds incredible texture and flavor.
- **Effortlessly Easy:** Despite their gourmet taste, these sliders come together in mere minutes of prep time, making them perfect for busy weeknights or impromptu gatherings.
- **Versatile for Any Occasion:** Whether served as a crowd-pleasing appetizer, a hearty lunch, or a fun family dinner, these sliders fit seamlessly into any menu.
- **Kid-Friendly & Adult-Approved:** The comforting flavors appeal to all ages, ensuring no slider is left behind!
Key Ingredients for Slider Perfection
Each component plays a crucial role in the symphony of flavors found in these Canadian Bacon & Havarti Sliders:
- Hawaiian Rolls: The slightly sweet, soft, and fluffy texture of Hawaiian rolls is the perfect foundation, providing a delightful contrast to the savory fillings. They bake beautifully and pull apart easily.
- Canadian Bacon: Thicker and more substantial than deli ham, Canadian bacon brings a satisfying smoky flavor and a meatier bite. Its round shape fits perfectly on the slider buns. Feel free to use your favorite high-quality ham if Canadian bacon isn’t available.
- Havarti Cheese: This Danish semi-hard cheese is renowned for its smooth, creamy texture and mild, buttery flavor. It melts exceptionally well, creating that gooey, irresistible layer between the ham and the bun. Its delicate taste complements the pesto glaze without overpowering it.
- Pesto: The heart of our flavorful glaze! Pesto adds a vibrant, herbaceous depth with notes of basil, garlic, pine nuts, and Parmesan. Use a good quality store-bought pesto or homemade for the freshest taste.
- Butter: The base of our rich glaze, butter ensures a golden-brown, crispy exterior and helps the flavors meld beautifully. It’s truly a secret weapon for baked sandwiches.
- Dijon Mustard: Just a touch of Dijon adds a tangy, zesty kick to the glaze, cutting through the richness of the butter and cheese and enhancing all the savory notes.
- Dried Minced Onion (or Fresh): Provides a subtle onion flavor that rounds out the glaze, adding a layer of aromatic complexity.
- Red Pepper Flakes: For those who love a hint of heat, red pepper flakes introduce a gentle warmth that makes each bite more exciting. Adjust to your preferred spice level.
- Mayonnaise & Sugar (Optional): A thin layer of sweetened mayonnaise adds an extra creamy dimension and a touch of sweetness to the rolls, though you can omit the sugar or skip the mayo entirely if preferred.

Canadian Bacon and Havarti Cheese Sliders with Pesto Glaze
Average Rating: 5 out of 5 stars from 5 votes
Prep Time: 6 mins | Cook Time: 14 mins | Total Time: 20 mins | Servings: 12 sliders

Who doesn’t love a good ham and cheese sandwich appetizer? Especially when it’s upgraded with Canadian Bacon, Havarti cheese, and a hot buttery pesto glaze?
Ingredients
- 1 stick butter (1/2 cup)
- 2 tablespoons pesto
- 1-3 teaspoon Dijon mustard, to taste (I used 1)
- 1 tablespoon dried minced onion, or fresh minced onion
- 1/2 to 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes
- 1 package Hawaiian rolls, 12 rolls
- 1/2 cup mayonnaise
- 1 teaspoon sugar, optional
- 12-14 ounces Canadian Bacon, about 24 small slices (or your favorite ham)
- 8 ounces sliced Havarti cheese
Instructions
- In a small bowl, melt the butter halfway in the microwave. It should be mostly melted with some soft, unmelted pieces remaining. This typically takes about 40-60 seconds.
- Stir in the pesto, Dijon mustard, minced onion, and red pepper flakes until well combined. Allow this mixture to sit at room temperature for a few minutes to thicken slightly while you prepare the sandwiches. If you’re in a hurry, a quick chill in the fridge will do the trick.
- Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
- Using a sharp serrated knife, carefully split the entire package of Hawaiian rolls in half horizontally, keeping them connected. (Do not separate the individual rolls yet.) Place the bottom half of the rolls on a rimmed baking sheet. A 9×13 inch pan also works perfectly.
- In a separate small bowl, combine the mayonnaise and sugar, if using, and stir until smooth. This adds a subtle sweetness and extra creaminess. Alternatively, you can simply spread plain mayonnaise.
- Spread the mayonnaise mixture evenly over the bottom half of the rolls. Then, layer the Canadian Bacon slices generously over the mayonnaise.
- Arrange the Havarti cheese slices over the Canadian Bacon, ensuring good coverage for maximum melt.
- Carefully place the top half of the rolls back onto the cheese and ham layers.
- Spoon the butter-pesto mixture evenly over the tops of the rolls, using a pastry brush or spoon to spread it all over for a beautiful glaze.
- Cover the rolls loosely with aluminum foil that has been sprayed with nonstick cooking spray on the underside. This prevents the melting cheese from sticking to the foil.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 12 minutes.
- Remove the foil. Continue baking for an additional 2-5 minutes, or until the tops of the rolls are golden brown and the cheese is bubbly and melted. Keep a close eye on the bottoms to prevent burning; a nice crispy bottom is desired!
- Once baked to perfection, remove from the oven. Use a sharp knife to cut along the lines of each individual slider. Serve hot and enjoy!

Tips for Achieving Perfect Sliders Every Time
While this recipe is incredibly straightforward, a few tips can help you achieve slider perfection:
- Don’t Separate Rolls Too Soon: Keeping the rolls connected for assembly makes layering much easier and ensures all your sliders stay intact during baking. You’ll cut them apart once they’re hot and ready to serve.
- Even Glaze Distribution: Use a pastry brush to ensure the buttery pesto glaze is spread evenly over all the tops of the rolls. This guarantees every slider gets that rich, golden crust and infused flavor.
- Watch Your Oven: Oven temperatures can vary, so keep an eye on your sliders during the last few minutes of baking, especially after removing the foil. You want the tops browned and the cheese bubbly, but not burnt.
- Quality Ingredients Matter: Since there are relatively few ingredients, the quality of each really shines through. Opt for good quality Canadian bacon, fresh pesto, and a creamy Havarti for the best results.
- Prepare Ahead: These sliders can be assembled a few hours in advance and kept covered in the refrigerator. Just bring them to room temperature for about 15-20 minutes before baking to ensure even cooking.
- Customize the Spice: Adjust the amount of red pepper flakes in the glaze to suit your preference. For a milder flavor, omit them entirely; for more heat, add an extra pinch.
Serving Suggestions & Variations
These versatile sliders are fantastic on their own, but they also pair wonderfully with a variety of dishes and can be easily customized.
Serving Ideas:
- Appetizer Spread: Serve alongside other party favorites like mini quiches, bruschetta, or a fresh vegetable platter.
- Soup & Salad Combo: Offer them with a light garden salad or a comforting bowl of tomato soup for a complete meal.
- BBQ Side: They make an excellent addition to any summer barbecue, complementing grilled meats and classic sides like coleslaw or potato salad.
- Game Day Feast: Pair with wings, nachos, and other game day staples for an unforgettable spread.
- Brunch Option: These are surprisingly great for a savory brunch, especially if you dial down the red pepper flakes.
Creative Variations:
- Different Cheeses: Experiment with other melting cheeses like Gruyere, Swiss, Provolone, or even a sharp white cheddar.
- Ham Alternatives: While Canadian bacon is fantastic, try thinly sliced deli ham, smoked turkey, or even roast beef for a different flavor profile.
- Sweet & Savory Glaze: For a slightly sweeter touch, add a tablespoon of honey or brown sugar to the butter-pesto glaze.
- Garlic Bread Sliders: For an extra garlicky kick, add a teaspoon of garlic powder to the butter glaze, or spread a thin layer of roasted garlic paste on the rolls.
- Spicy Kick: Incorporate a dash of hot sauce into the mayonnaise or glaze for those who love extra heat.
- Herbacious Twist: Add other dried or fresh herbs to the glaze, such as oregano, thyme, or chives, for added aroma and flavor.

Who doesn’t love a good ham and cheese sandwich? Especially when it is upgraded with Canadian Bacon, Havarti cheese, a buttery pesto glaze, and baked to hot cheesy perfection? These are my new favorite appetizer!…or lunch. Or dinner!

The other day my mom came over to visit (she drives 2 hours every Thursday just to hang out with me, isn’t she the best?)
She saw two copies of the same book on the table in my entryway. “Why do you have two of the same book, are they gifts?” she said.

“Yes, one of them is for you for Mother’s Day this Sunday.” <– that’s what I didn’t say, but I couldn’t think of a clever cover up, so I think I said something like, “uh huh, I gotta go to the bathroom” and left the room.
Later that day she was talking about what she should get her own mom for Mother’s Day. “I was going to get her a book, but then I thought, well that’s kind of a lame Mother’s Day present. I can do better than that.” And that’s when I knew I was in serious jeopardy of losing my favorite child status.
(There is a 5-way battle going for favorite child status in my family, but I know I’ve got it in the bag. I’m pretty sure all of my siblings think they’ve got it too, though. Which means my mom is pretty freakin amazing.) Here’s the mug my sister Nikki just got my mom:

I feel like I should also add some Karen n’ Eric classic to this story. We bought the two books at Target last week, one for his mom, one for mine. (We haven’t even read it yet. But we saw the movie and it was so great! And my book club read it and said it was great! Yes, we are those annoying people that recommend things before actually trying it. <–“these people don’t eat gluten because someone in their yoga class told them not to.”)

But THEN, being the responsible people that we are, we forgot to send the book to his mom who lives in Montana. So Eric bought it on Kindle and sent that to her on Mother’s Day so that we wouldn’t be late. Books bought: 3. Book read: 0. At least we have our own copy now!
Well, Happy Mother’s Day anyway, Mom! Next year I’m getting you something WAY COOLER. I will redeem myself! (Read the disclaimer comment from Janice/Mom below that I’m sure will show up soon. “I love books! This looks like a really good one! I love all my children equally!”)
