Planning the Perfect Baby Shower: Celebrating Milestones with Festive Themes and a Comforting Chicken Parmesan Pot Pie

As Cinco de Mayo approaches, a familiar buzz fills the air, bringing with it vibrant colors, festive music, and the promise of delicious food. While traditionally a time for margaritas and Mexican celebrations, this year holds a special twist for me: I’m co-hosting a Cinco de Mayo-themed baby shower for my dear friend, Sarah. It might sound a tad unconventional for a baby shower, but trust me, we’re planning something truly unforgettable. This fusion of cultural celebration and new beginnings is set to be an event filled with joy, laughter, and a unique charm that will leave everyone smiling.
The pressure is certainly on to make this shower exceptional. Not long ago, Sarah and a group of our amazing friends threw an absolutely epic baby shower for me. It wasn’t just a party; it was an experience that set a new standard for celebratory gatherings. Seriously, it was the most fun I’ve ever had at a baby shower, and that’s not even counting the incredible gifts I took home. The theme was a “Mustache Bash,” and it was executed with such creative flair that every detail brought immense delight.
A Look Back: The Epic Mustache Bash
Everywhere you looked, a whimsical mustache adorned the scene. From the plates and napkins to the charming dessert parfaits, the theme was meticulously woven into every element of the decor. It transformed the space into a playful and memorable setting, ensuring that every guest felt immersed in the fun. The consistency of the theme made for fantastic photo opportunities and created a cohesive, joyful atmosphere.
Even the balloons, typically simple party staples, were given a touch of character with tiny mustaches. These small, thoughtful details were what made the “Mustache Bash” so special. They showed a true dedication to the theme and demonstrated how a consistent decorative element can elevate an entire event, making it feel bespoke and incredibly personal.
The desserts were equally impressive. Cupcake toppers were not just decorative; they were mustache rings that guests could wear, adding an interactive and amusing element to the sweet treats. And for an extra touch of thematic perfection, they even found a special mold to create delectable chocolate mustaches. These edible delights were a huge hit, proving that even the smallest culinary details can make a big impact on a party’s success.

The fun didn’t stop at the food and decorations. Guests were delighted with mustache-themed favors to take home, ensuring the memories of the bash lasted long after the party ended. These thoughtful mementos reinforced the playful atmosphere and served as a charming reminder of the joyful occasion. Personal touches like these are key to creating a truly memorable event that resonates with guests.
Instead of playing some of the more common, sometimes awkward, baby shower games, we engaged in a hilariously competitive round of “Name that Stache.” This game challenged us to identify famous mustaches, which turned out to be much harder than it sounded! I clearly didn’t win this one, as I seemed convinced that every famous mustache belonged to Burt Reynolds. The laughter and good-natured rivalry made it a fantastic way to engage everyone without any of the usual baby shower clichés.
Perhaps the absolute best part of the “Mustache Bash” was when we all adorned our fingers with tiny temporary mustache tattoos. It was such a simple yet brilliant idea that brought out the inner child in everyone. These small, silly gestures created a sense of camaraderie and added an extra layer of personalized fun, making the shower truly unforgettable. Yes, please, to more finger tattoos at parties!
Crafting an Unforgettable Cinco de Mayo Baby Shower
So, as you can see, the bar has been set incredibly high! Now, the delightful challenge falls upon me to help orchestrate the coolest Cinco de Mayo baby shower ever for Sarah. The vibrant theme itself offers a wealth of opportunities for creative decoration, delicious food, and engaging activities, all without needing margaritas to make it festive. Think colorful papel picado banners fluttering in the breeze, miniature piñatas as party favors, and floral arrangements in bright reds, oranges, and yellows. For activities, we could have a “decorate your own onesie” station with Mexican-inspired stencils, or a “guess the baby food flavor” game with a spicy twist. The atmosphere will be infused with upbeat mariachi music (or a modern Latin playlist) to keep the energy high.
For refreshments, we’re planning a spread that goes beyond the usual baby shower fare. Imagine a taco bar with all the fixings, fresh guacamole and salsa, vibrant fruit salads, and refreshing aguas frescas in flavors like horchata and jamaica. Desserts will continue the theme with churros, tres leches cake, and colorful sugar cookies. The goal is to create a joyous, welcoming environment that celebrates Sarah and her upcoming bundle of joy with all the warmth and festivity of Cinco de Mayo. I’m actively seeking inspiration from various sources, including this fantastic resource for Cinco de Mayo celebrations. Wish me luck as we finalize the details to make this celebration truly special!

Classic Parmesan Chicken Pot Pie is one of the most heavenly dishes ever created. It’s delicious and it comes together really fast!
Ingredients
- 1 28-oz can crushed tomatoes
- 1/2 teaspoon Italian Seasoning
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
- 3 cups cooked, shredded chicken (a rotisserie works great for convenience)
- 1/4 cup shredded Parmesan cheese, or more to taste
- 3/4 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1 refrigerated pie crust, at room temperature (or use your favorite homemade recipe)
- 1 egg white
- 1/4 teaspoon Italian seasoning (for topping)
- 3 tablespoons shredded Parmesan cheese, at least! (for topping)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 C).
- Pour the crushed tomatoes into a 9-inch cast iron skillet. Add 1/2 teaspoon Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper, then stir to combine thoroughly. Gently fold in the cooked, shredded chicken, ensuring it’s well incorporated into the sauce. (If you have a little helper, be prepared for some tomato splashes!) Top generously with Parmesan and mozzarella cheeses.
- Carefully unroll the refrigerated pie crust and lay it over the chicken and cheese mixture in the skillet. You can either press the edges firmly around the rim of the skillet for a rustic look or tuck the edges neatly inside the skillet for a more contained finish.
- In a small bowl, whisk the egg white with 1 teaspoon of water until lightly frothy. Brush this egg wash evenly over the entire pie crust, including the edges. Sprinkle with the remaining 1/4 teaspoon Italian seasoning and 3 tablespoons (or more!) of shredded Parmesan cheese. Bake for 40 to 45 minutes, or until the crust is beautifully golden brown and the filling is bubbly. Remove from oven and let cool for at least 10 minutes before slicing and serving. This cooling time allows the pie to set, making it easier to serve and enhancing the flavors.
