In a world often filled with endless choices and complicated decisions, sometimes you just need something straightforward and undeniably satisfying. Whether it’s those perplexing personality quizzes that try to pigeonhole you into a single trait, or the daily dilemma of choosing what to cook for dinner, simplicity can be a breath of fresh air. I confess, I’m one of those people who struggles with defining myself in a few words, feeling like a blend of “curious,” “passionate,” and yes, sometimes a little “lazy.” Life is rarely black and white, and neither is my approach to baking.

My husband, Eric, recently endured one such personality test at work, cycling through various color designations before realizing the whole exercise was perhaps a bit arbitrary. It just goes to show, some things are best left uncomplicated. And that sentiment perfectly extends to baking. There are days when I crave an elaborate, multi-step dessert, and then there are days – most days, actually – when speed, ease, and guaranteed deliciousness are the top priorities. That’s precisely where these cake mix cookies shine.

The Ultimate Shortcut to Irresistible Chocolate Sandwich Cookies

This recipe isn’t just easy; it’s astonishingly fast. Picture this: less than half an hour from contemplating cookies to actually savoring them. This isn’t a dream; it’s the reality of these Homemade Oreos. The base of these delightful treats is a simple box of Devil’s Food cake mix, transformed into incredibly soft and chewy chocolate cookies with just a couple of extra ingredients. Alone, these cookies are good, but when you introduce them to a generous layer of homemade cream cheese frosting, they transcend into something truly extraordinary.

The beauty of using a cake mix is its inherent convenience. It provides the perfect balance of dry ingredients, ensuring your cookies come out consistently tender and moist every single time. With just a few pantry staples like oil and eggs, you can whip up a batch of these chocolatey wonders without breaking a sweat. This makes them ideal for last-minute dessert needs, unexpected guests, or simply a spontaneous craving for something sweet.

Why These Homemade Oreos Are a Must-Try:

  • Unbelievably Easy: If you can mix three ingredients, you can make these cookies. It’s truly that simple!
  • Lightning Fast: From prep to plate in under 30 minutes, perfect for busy schedules.
  • Irresistibly Tender: The cake mix base ensures a soft, melt-in-your-mouth texture.
  • Perfectly Balanced Flavor: Rich chocolate cookies meet a dreamy, slightly tangy cream cheese frosting.
  • Crowd-Pleaser: Everyone, young and old, adores a good chocolate sandwich cookie, and these homemade versions are next level.

I recall a recent evening when friends Amelia and Lawrence dropped by unexpectedly after the kids were in bed. I had promised dessert, but time was ticking, and my usual elaborate baking plans seemed out of reach. Flipping through cookbooks, the clock kept advancing. Then, a lightbulb moment! These Homemade Oreos. In a flash, I had the dough mixed, cookies baked, and frosting prepared. The sheer joy of going from a dessert thought to actual cookie consumption in less than half an hour is an experience every home baker should have.

The cookies themselves offer a delightful depth of chocolate flavor and an incredibly soft texture that almost crumbles in your mouth. While they are lovely on their own (especially if you decide to add some chocolate chips or other mix-ins to the dough), it’s the magical pairing with the cream cheese frosting that truly elevates them. The frosting cuts through the richness of the chocolate with a subtle tang, creating a harmonious symphony of flavors.

Crafting the Perfect Cream Cheese Frosting

The cream cheese frosting is the soul of these sandwich cookies. It’s incredibly easy to make and provides that essential creamy, dreamy contrast to the chocolate cookie. You can customize the flavor profile of your frosting to suit your preference. While classic vanilla extract is always a winner, I often love to add a touch of coconut extract for a unique twist that evokes tropical vibes. Almond extract also works wonderfully, adding a warm, nutty depth. Don’t be shy about adjusting the powdered sugar to achieve your desired level of sweetness and consistency.

Get ready to impress yourself and everyone lucky enough to share these delightful treats!

Homemade Oreos with Cream Cheese Frosting (Cake Mix Cookies)

These are probably the easiest, fastest cookies ever. Add some oil and eggs to a cake mix, whip up a cream cheese frosting, and you’re done! These homemade Oreos are so tender and moist!

Ingredients

For the cookies:

  • 1 (15.75-oz) box Devil’s Food cake mix
  • 1/3 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 large eggs

For the frosting:

  • 1 batch cream cheese frosting

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper or a silpat.
  2. In a large bowl or stand mixer, beat together the cake mix, oil, and eggs. Mix until combined.
  3. Use your hands to roll the dough into balls that are a little smaller than a golf ball. Place them about 2 inches apart on the baking sheet.
  4. Bake at 350 F for 9-11 minutes. Take them out when they have just barely stopped shining on top.
  5. Make the rest of the dough into cookies and bake.
  6. Clean out your mixing bowl (or get a new one) and make the Cream Cheese Frosting. I used 2 cups of powdered sugar, but you can use more to taste.
  7. Use a spatula or knife to spread frosting on the bottom of a cookie. Top with another cookie.
  8. Eat with a giant glass of milk!

Notes

If you are using a stand mixer for the frosting, don’t worry about softening the cream cheese and butter first. Just beat it for a while until it’s smooth and creamy.
