Easy Beer-Battered Fish Burrito Bowls with Zesty Orange Avocado Salsa

Life’s little quirks often bring unexpected joy, don’t they? Just yesterday, I found myself collecting a surprising stack of glasses from our bathroom counter. There were only four, but it felt like a comical abundance, leading Eric and me to chuckle at our own domestic habits. Do you also have a secret collection of water glasses residing in your bathroom, accumulating day by day?

This delightful absurdity brought to mind a story about Eric’s sister, Reesy. Years ago, she was staying with a friend at her friend’s parents’ house while they were away. When the parents returned for a few weeks, the mom one evening casually wondered why there were so few clean glasses in the cupboard, even after the dishes had been done. That’s when Reesy, with a sheepish grin, went upstairs and discovered a grand total of fifteen glasses in her bedroom! She confessed that each day, she’d arrive home, grab a fresh glass of water, and head straight to her room, leaving a trail of forgotten glassware in her wake. Later that night, under the cover of darkness, she quietly collected, washed, and returned them all without a single word. It’s these small, relatable moments that add a touch of humor to our daily lives, much like how a simple, flavorful meal can brighten an ordinary evening.

Golden-brown Beer-Battered Fish Fillets, ready for a burrito bowl

Speaking of things that brighten your day, take a look at those three glorious fish fillets in the image above. You can thank my neighbor, Tyrone, for that perfect plating. Tyrone is a familiar face around my porch, often stopping by to chat while I’m photographing food, or sometimes, to heroically rescue my perpetually neglected children. On this particular day, I was preparing these very burrito bowls. “Whatcha makin’?” he asked. “Burrito bowls,” I replied. He looked at my initial setup, with only two fish fillets, and declared, “What’s all this rabbit food? Only two fish? Make this a MAN’S BOWL!” He insisted I add another, even graciously holding my fussy baby while I artfully arranged the third fillet. And you know what? He was absolutely right.

The Secret to Incredible Crispy Fish: Gorton’s Beer Battered Fillets

Folks, these beer battered fish fillets are genuinely awesome. Have you ever attempted to make homemade beer-battered fish? I did once, for a batch of Beer Battered Fish Tacos (a rather memorable adventure for this Mormon girl buying beer for the first time!). While undeniably delicious, frying your own fish from scratch can be quite a laborious undertaking.

Fresh cilantro and lime slices, perfect garnishes for a Mexican-inspired fish dish

That’s where these frozen fillets from Gorton’s come into play – they are *so good* and about a hundred times easier to prepare. The authentic pub-style beer flavor truly shines through, delivering a crispy, tender fillet that’s perfect for tacos, or in today’s case, an incredible burrito bowl. The best part? Preparation couldn’t be simpler: just pull them from your freezer, spread them on a baking tray, and bake. No thawing required! Finding them is a breeze too; head to the frozen seafood aisle and look for their distinctive bright yellow packaging.

Brighten Your Bowl: The Orange Avocado Salsa

Thinly sliced red onions, a key ingredient for the zesty salsa

Fresh orange segments, adding a sweet and tangy touch to the salsa

A vibrant bowl of homemade Orange Avocado Salsa

To really elevate these burrito bowls, I whipped up a batch of this phenomenal Orange Avocado Salsa. Seriously, I could eat this stuff by the spoonful (and I absolutely did!). It’s deceptively simple yet bursting with flavor. The key ingredients are thinly sliced red onions, which are lightly pickled in fresh lime juice, sweet and juicy orange segments, creamy avocado, a kick of diced jalapeño, and fragrant cilantro. The lime juice not only adds a bright tang but also mellows the sharpness of the red onion, creating a perfectly balanced condiment. This salsa delivers a refreshing, tangy, and slightly spicy punch that complements the rich, crispy beer-battered fish exquisitely. Its vibrant colors also make your burrito bowl a feast for the eyes!

Building the Perfect Beer Battered Fish Burrito Bowl

A completed Beer-Battered-Fish Burrito Bowl with Orange Avocado Salsa, ready to eat

Burrito bowls are fantastic because they offer endless customization and a healthier alternative to traditional burritos, without sacrificing any flavor. They provide all the delicious components of a wrapped burrito but served in a convenient bowl, making them naturally gluten-friendly (if you opt for plain rice) and easier to enjoy with a spoon. For our Beer Battered Fish Burrito Bowls, we start with a base of fluffy rice, adding savory black beans seasoned with cumin, and sweet thawed corn. Then comes the star: generous pieces of the crispy beer-battered fish. The crowning glory is a dollop of our fresh Orange Avocado Salsa, followed by a sprinkle of crumbled Queso Fresco and a drizzle of Mexican Crema (or sour cream). Each bite offers a harmonious blend of textures and tastes: the crunch of the fish, the creaminess of the avocado, the tang of the orange, and the slight spice of the jalapeño. It’s a truly dynamic and satisfying meal that caters to diverse palates.

Crispy fish is one thing, but BEER battered fish takes it to a whole new level. Throw it in a burrito bowl with some Orange Avocado Salsa (plus allll the fixin’s) and you’ve got one incredibly satisfying Mexican inspired dinner for the winner.

Ingredients

  • 4 cups Coconut Jasmine Rice, or 4-6 cups cooked rice
  • 1 (18 ounce) package Gorton’s Beer Battered Fish Fillets, One to Two packages*

For the Orange Avocado Salsa:

  • 1/4 cup fresh lime juice, 2-3 limes
  • 1 small red onion, or half a large onion, sliced very thin
  • 1 jalapeno, diced (seeds and membranes discarded)
  • 1 bunch cilantro, chopped and divided
  • 2 large oranges, chopped
  • 1 large avocado
  • salt and pepper , to taste

For the Burrito bowls:

  • 1 can black beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • 2 cups frozen corn, thawed
  • 1/2 cup Queso Fresco, crumbled
  • Mexican Crema, or sour cream
  • avocados, sliced
  • limes, sliced
  • jalapenos, sliced

Instructions

  1. Start by making the rice. Any kind of cooked rice will do, but it’s especially delicious with the suggested coconut and cilantro flavors.
  2. Next, prepare the Orange Avocado Salsa. Juice 2-3 limes to yield about 1/4 cup of fresh lime juice, and pour it into a medium bowl.
  3. Slice the red onion very thinly. Briefly rinse the sliced onion under cold water for a few seconds to reduce its pungency, then add it to the bowl with the lime juice. Stir to coat the onions; this begins the pickling process while you prepare the remaining ingredients.
  4. Chop the jalapeño, removing the seeds and membranes if you prefer a milder salsa. Add the diced jalapeño to the onions.
  5. Finely chop the bunch of cilantro. Add approximately 2 tablespoons of chopped cilantro to the onion mixture.
  6. Chop the 2 large oranges (refer to images for guidance) and add them to the bowl with the onions and other salsa ingredients.
  7. Dice the large avocado and gently fold it into the salsa mixture.
  8. Season the salsa generously with salt and pepper to taste. I typically use at least 3/4 teaspoon of salt to bring out the flavors.
  9. Drain and rinse the black beans thoroughly. Place them in a separate bowl and season with 1 teaspoon of cumin, and salt and pepper to taste. Don’t hold back on the seasoning! Stir in 1-2 tablespoons of chopped cilantro.**
  10. In yet another bowl, season the thawed frozen corn with salt and pepper.
  11. Crumble the Queso Fresco into a bowl. Prepare any other desired garnishes, such as additional sliced avocado, lime wedges, or sliced jalapeños.
  12. To assemble, divide the cooked rice among 4 individual serving bowls. Top with portions of corn, black beans, Orange Avocado Salsa, crumbled queso fresco, and the crispy beer-battered fish fillets.
  13. Serve immediately with extra sliced avocado, lime wedges, sliced jalapeños, and a generous drizzle of Mexican Crema. (If Mexican Crema is unavailable, you can thin out sour cream with a little milk, or simply serve a dollop of sour cream as is.)

Notes

*The quantity of fish you use is completely up to your preference! Each package contains 10 fillets. I recommend buying two packages; if you have any leftovers, they are fantastic for fish tacos the next day!

**I typically serve the black beans cold, but you can easily warm them in the microwave for a minute or two if you prefer them hot. The same applies to the corn.
