  11. Easy Spaghetti Sauce Recipe

Growing up, spaghetti was a fixture in our household, a weekly meal that brought varying levels of enthusiasm. One memorable evening in high school, my brother, in a burst of teenage creativity (or perhaps madness), hosted a double date featuring what he called “Pighetti.” Imagine: a paper tablecloth adorned with marker-drawn plates and silverware, on which spaghetti was served directly. The catch? Guests had to eat with their hands tied behind their backs, complete with “pig noses” fashioned from egg cartons. As you might predict for a 90s gathering, it quickly escalated into an epic food fight, with “Pighetti” flying across the kitchen, embedding itself in hair and faces. My parents spent years discovering crusty red sauce remnants in the most unexpected corners of our home!

A beautifully plated bowl of spaghetti noodles adorned with a rich, easy homemade sauce, accompanied by a fork and golden garlic bread on the side.

My own memories of this chaotic event were hazy until my mom recently reminded me via a group text: “I came home from my college night class and saw one of the kids in the front yard with his head under the hose, rinsing his hair – in February! Mom-alarm-bells started ringing!” Ah, so my mother’s legendary coolness was actually her being away. It was a comforting realization that I haven’t entirely lost my parental strictness!

Despite the “Pighetti” incident, traditional spaghetti remained a weekly staple. Confession: seven-year-old me was a harsh critic, and I truly disliked my mom’s version – ground beef barely mixed with cheap marinara and overcooked noodles. But no judgment here, not anymore. As the youngest of five, with a mom pursuing her degree, simply getting food on the table was a triumph (props to anything not frozen pizza!).

A pristine white plate generously filled with spaghetti, exquisitely topped with a rich, easy homemade spaghetti sauce, a fork poised for enjoyment.

Fast forward to today, and I find myself in a surprisingly similar situation. I’m busy, my kids adore spaghetti, it’s budget-friendly, and the ingredients are always on hand. We enjoy it every couple of weeks. (Yes, Mom, I’ve become you! The circle of life, pasta-style, is complete!) But rest assured, we strictly adhere to the no-food-fight policy. My children must never hear the tale of “Pighetti”!

Over the years, I’ve discovered simple yet brilliant tricks to transform that once-dreaded childhood meal into something truly extraordinary – a **family-favorite dinner** that even I eagerly anticipate. This recipe is worlds apart from the basic, mixed-in-the-pot version. And yes, our secret starts with a humble jar of store-bought marinara. For those who crave an authentic, slow-simmered experience, I also have a completely from-scratch spaghetti sauce recipe, often known as Bolognese Sauce, which is now live on the blog. But for tonight, for those bustling **weeknight dinners**, this **quick and easy spaghetti sauce** will stop you in your tracks with its incredible flavor!

Easy Homemade Spaghetti Sauce: Your Weeknight Hero

When it comes to crafting a truly exceptional **spaghetti sauce**, even a quick one, there are some fundamental principles I live by. Don’t be fooled into thinking any tomato-based sauce will be delicious; quality and technique matter. Here are the non-negotiable steps to create a show-stopping sauce, pronto:

  • The Power of Onion: Yes, chopping an onion can bring tears to your eyes (I speak from experience – every single time!). But its aromatic depth is crucial for a flavorful base. It adds a layer of sweetness and savory complexity that you simply cannot skip. If time is truly of the essence, a generous amount of dried minced onion from your spice cabinet (at least 1/4 cup) can work in a pinch. Just toast it lightly in olive oil before proceeding with the recipe to awaken its flavor.
  • Garlic is Non-Negotiable: Fresh garlic offers the best flavor, hands down. However, I’m a realist, and a jar of minced garlic from your fridge works perfectly well for this **quick pasta sauce**. Don’t be shy; use a couple of tablespoons to infuse the sauce with its pungent, irresistible aroma.
  • Spice it Up: Store-bought marinara sauces are often under-seasoned to appeal to a broader palate. To truly make this your own, you *must* add more spices. **Italian seasoning** is your best friend here, covering most of our bases. But don’t forget the warmth of crushed red pepper (adjust to your heat preference), freshly ground black pepper, and of course, a good pinch of salt to bring all the flavors into harmony.
  • The Marinara Advantage: Why start with a jar of marinara instead of canned whole or diced tomatoes? The key lies in convenience and depth of flavor. Jarred marinara is already cooked down, resulting in a thicker consistency and a more developed flavor profile. While you absolutely can create a fantastic sauce from plain canned tomatoes (my Bolognese recipe proves it!), it requires more simmering time and tender loving care. This is a **30-minute spaghetti sauce** for Tuesday nights when soccer practice looms! Grab that jar and let’s go!
  • Italian Sausage for the Win: For a **quick meat sauce**, Italian sausage far surpasses simple ground beef in delivering rich flavor. Made from pork, it brings a delightful fattiness and is already seasoned with a medley of Italian herbs and spices, providing a double punch of deliciousness without extra effort. You can opt for mild or sweet Italian sausage based on your preference.
  • Kris’s Briny Secret: My mother-in-law, Kris, an incredibly intuitive cook, shares her brilliant tip for adding an instant burst of flavor: “fridge rummage” for briny condiments. Once your sauce is simmering, peek into your fridge for ingredients like green olives, Kalamata olives, pepperoncinis, or pimientos. These add a complex, tangy dimension with almost zero effort. We’ll delve into how to incorporate this genius idea in the instructions below!

The Secret Ingredients to Elevate Your Sauce

The beauty of this **easy spaghetti sauce recipe** lies in its simplicity, leveraging pre-made components to achieve a gourmet taste. Our goal is to transform something good into something extraordinary – fast, effortless, and incredibly delicious. This list provides an overview; you’ll find the precise measurements and detailed instructions in the recipe card below.

  • Olive oil
  • Onion (fresh or dried minced)
  • Essential spices: Italian seasoning, kosher salt, crushed red pepper, black pepper
  • Garlic (fresh or jarred)
  • Jar of quality marinara sauce (any brand works, but a good base helps!)
  • Crushed or petite diced tomatoes (canned)
  • Italian sausage (mild or sweet)
  • Balsamic vinegar
  • Beef base (like Better Than Bouillon)
  • Spaghetti noodles, for serving
  • Optional garnishes: fresh basil or parsley, grated Parmesan cheese

How to Make Quick Spaghetti Sauce from a Jar: Step-by-Step

The first step to any “easy dinner” is often simplifying the prep work. My personal hurdle is usually chopping. So, let’s tackle that first and then dive into creating our incredible **30-minute spaghetti sauce**.

A hand skillfully using a knife to smash garlic cloves, a technique that makes peeling and chopping much easier for spaghetti sauce preparation.

Garlic Prep Made Simple: Forget those cumbersome garlic presses! I find a knife much more effective. Simply crush each clove with the flat side of your knife, peel away the skin, and then mince. If the thought of chopping fresh garlic sends shivers down your spine, don’t worry! Grab that jar of pre-minced garlic from your fridge – it’s perfectly acceptable for this recipe, ensuring you still get that essential garlic flavor without the fuss.

Taming the Onion: Onions are a bit trickier to bypass for flavor, but I have a secret weapon against the tears: trusty onion goggles! They seal around your eyes and genuinely make a difference. (You’ll have to trust me on the effectiveness, as I’ll spare you the photo of my post-goggle “raccoon eyes”).

A clear tutorial image demonstrating the proper technique for chopping a yellow onion on a wooden cutting board, essential for our easy spaghetti sauce.

Sautéing Aromatics & Spices: In a large Dutch oven or soup pot, heat a couple of tablespoons of olive oil over medium heat. Add your chopped onion and all the dry spices: Italian seasoning, kosher salt, crushed red pepper, and black pepper. Sauté this mixture for about 5 minutes, until the onion begins to soften and turn translucent. Cooking the dried herbs in oil at this stage is a brilliant trick to deepen their flavor significantly.

Golden-brown chopped onions, perfectly sautéed with fragrant seasonings, ready for the next step in preparing an easy homemade spaghetti meat sauce.

Next, add your minced garlic to the pan. If the pan seems dry, drizzle in a tiny bit more olive oil to prevent the garlic from scorching. Sauté for just about 1 minute until the garlic becomes wonderfully fragrant – a sign of impending deliciousness.

Browning the Italian Sausage: Now, add 1 pound of mild Italian sausage (or sweet, if you prefer) to the pot. If your sausage comes in casings, remove them first. Use a wooden spoon to break up the sausage into smaller pieces as it cooks. Continue to cook for 3-5 minutes, ensuring the sausage is fully browned and no longer pink. At this point, you have the option to drain off some of the excess grease if it looks particularly fatty. Personally, I often skip this step for a moderate amount of fat because, as I always say, fat equals flavor!

A step-by-step image showing Italian sausage being added to the cooked onions and seasonings, ready to brown for the easy homemade spaghetti sauce.

Building the Sauce Base: Once the sausage is cooked, it’s time to introduce our tomato components. Pour in a 28-ounce jar of marinara sauce. While I often gravitate towards Rao’s for its quality, any brand you enjoy will work beautifully since we’re enhancing it so much. Also, add a 15-ounce can of crushed tomatoes (or petite diced tomatoes if crushed are hard to find in that size – tomato industry, why the mystery with sizes?). Don’t drain the canned tomatoes; dump it all in for maximum flavor and moisture.

A jar of Rao's Homemade Marinara sauce being poured over the browned meat and aromatics, forming the base of our easy homemade spaghetti sauce recipe.

To ensure we capture every last drop of flavor, add about a cup of water to your empty marinara jar, shake it vigorously to rinse, then pour that water into the empty crushed tomato can to clean it out, and finally, add all of this flavorful liquid to your simmering sauce. This adds moisture and ensures no flavor goes to waste!

The Flavor Amplifiers: Stir in 2 tablespoons of balsamic vinegar, which adds a lovely tang and depth, and 1 teaspoon of Better Than Bouillon Beef Base. The beef base is a fantastic secret weapon for boosting that savory, umami flavor, especially since we’re using pork Italian sausage. Better Than Bouillon is a pantry essential for so many recipes!

Kris’s Briny Boost (Optional, but Recommended!): Now for my mother-in-law Kris’s fantastic tip! Take a moment to rummage through your fridge for any open jars of briny or Italian-leaning condiments. You’re looking for things like:

  • Kalamata olives
  • Green olives
  • Anchovies (don’t knock it ’til you try it – they melt away and add incredible umami!)
  • Pepperoncinis, or any pickled peppers (roasted red peppers are also great)

There’s no need to open a new jar just for this. But if you have something on hand, adding 2-4 tablespoons of the vinegary brine, plus a tablespoon or two of chopped-up bits (like green olives or anchovies), can add an unexpected and delicious layer of complexity. This is an incredible way to introduce tons of flavor with almost no extra effort. Give it a try!

Simmer and Serve: Once all the ingredients are in the pot, bring the sauce to a gentle simmer. Lower the heat to medium-low, just enough to maintain a low, consistent bubble. The longer you let your **easy spaghetti sauce** simmer, the more the flavors will meld and deepen. A 10-minute simmer is perfectly delicious and makes it a true **30-minute weeknight dinner**. A 20-minute simmer is even better, and an hour is ideal if you have the luxury of time (though I rarely do for this quick version!). If you plan to simmer for an extended period, remember to add a bit more water (about 1/4 cup at a time) every half hour or so to prevent it from becoming too thick.

Perfecting Your Pasta Plate

With your **homemade spaghetti sauce** simmering beautifully, it’s time to prepare the star carbohydrate: the spaghetti noodles. This recipe yields enough sauce to perfectly coat 1 pound of pasta, which typically serves about 8 people. In a large pot, bring several quarts of water to a rolling boil. Don’t forget to generously salt your pasta water – it should taste as salty as the ocean! I usually add about 2 tablespoons of kosher salt. Once boiling, add your 16 ounces of dry spaghetti noodles and stir well to prevent sticking. Continue stirring occasionally for 8-9 minutes, or until the pasta is perfectly al dente – tender with a slight bite.

Now comes a truly pivotal decision, a topic of endless debate in many Italian-American households: to pre-sauce the noodles, or not to pre-sauce the noodles?

I’m reminded of my teenage sister’s new friend, a vegetarian, who once helped prepare dinner. He served the pasta and sauce in separate bowls, a novel concept that utterly baffled my meat-and-sauce-mixed-in family. “A meal with no meat? Noodles without the sauce? What’s next, flying pigs?” they exclaimed, perhaps referencing a certain classic movie line, “He don’t eat no meat?? That’s okay, I make you lamb.”

Whether you mix your pasta directly into the simmering sauce for an even coating or serve the sauce on top of a bed of noodles is entirely up to your personal preference (or your guests’, especially the little ones!). If you opt for separate serving, be sure to drizzle your drained noodles with a touch of olive oil to keep them from clumping together. Whichever way you choose, your flavorful **quick spaghetti sauce** is ready to be enjoyed!

What to Serve with Your Delicious Spaghetti Sauce

Completing your **easy homemade spaghetti sauce** meal is simple, yet offers endless possibilities. Here’s my go-to combination for a truly effortless, universally loved dinner:

  • The Best Garlic Bread of Your Life: Start with my One Hour French Bread or a quality Italian loaf from the store. Transform it into The Best Garlic Bread of Your Life – golden, buttery, and absolutely essential for soaking up every last drop of sauce.
  • Crisp Caesar Salad: A fresh, bright salad provides the perfect counterpoint to the rich pasta. I’m legitimately obsessed with the Caesar salad kit from Costco for its incredible convenience and flavor, but any green salad will do. Think light, fresh, and crunchy – like an Apple Gorgonzola Salad or a Green Salad with Feta and Beets – to balance out the satisfying carbs.

This trio forms the ultimate brainless, crowd-pleasing meal that guarantees happy eaters every time.

Storing and Reheating Leftover Spaghetti Sauce

Making a generous batch of this **easy spaghetti sauce** means you’ll likely have delicious leftovers, which is always a win for future meals! To store, allow the sauce to cool completely to room temperature. Then, transfer it to an airtight container. While glass containers are ideal for preventing stubborn tomato stains, don’t let a lack of fancy glassware deter you – any airtight container will do. Trust me, I know; my plastic containers bear the colorful evidence of countless spaghetti nights!

Your homemade spaghetti sauce will keep beautifully in the refrigerator for 4-6 days. When you’re ready to enjoy it again, simply warm the sauce in a saucepan over medium heat, stirring occasionally until it’s heated through. If it appears too thick, add a splash of water to reach your desired consistency. Alternatively, you can reheat individual portions in the microwave, but be sure to use a microwave-safe cover to prevent any “Mt. Vesuvius 2.0” eruptions.

Can You Freeze Spaghetti Sauce for Future Meals?

Absolutely! This **homemade spaghetti sauce** is practically designed for freezing, making it an excellent candidate for **meal prep**. All its components freeze, thaw, and reheat wonderfully without compromising flavor or texture. Once your sauce has cooled to room temperature, spoon it into a freezer-safe ziplock bag (or an airtight freezer container) of an appropriate size. Squeeze out any excess air, label it with the date, and pop it into your freezer. This **freezer-friendly spaghetti sauce** will happily last for 4-6 months, ready to rescue you on a busy evening. Consider doubling the recipe next time to stock your freezer with convenient, pre-portioned meals!

To use your frozen spaghetti sauce, the easiest method is to transfer the ziplock bag to the refrigerator and let it thaw overnight. Once thawed, warm it in a saucepan over medium heat or in the microwave with a cover. For those truly last-minute emergencies, you can even cook the sauce from frozen! Carefully cut the ziplock bag away from the frozen block of sauce, place the frozen sauce directly into a saucepan, add a splash of water to prevent scorching, and cook over medium-low heat, stirring occasionally, until it’s heated through. Who has time to thaw, right?

Frequently Asked Questions About Spaghetti Sauce

How to thicken spaghetti sauce?

The most effective way to naturally thicken any **spaghetti sauce recipe** is to let it simmer uncovered at a low temperature for an extended period. This allows excess liquid to evaporate, concentrating the flavors and thickening the sauce. While this particular recipe is designed for speed (under 30 minutes), allowing it to simmer longer will certainly result in a thicker, richer sauce. For an even more authentic, thicker sauce that cooks down beautifully, explore my Bolognese Sauce Recipe!

How long is spaghetti sauce good for in the fridge?

Properly stored in an airtight container, your homemade spaghetti sauce will remain fresh and delicious in the refrigerator for approximately 4-6 days. If you find yourself with more sauce than you can enjoy within that timeframe, simply transfer it to a freezer-safe bag, label it with the date, and freeze. It will keep well in the freezer for 4-6 months and reheats beautifully for another **quick family dinner**!

How to make jar spaghetti sauce better?

You’ve come to the right place, because that’s precisely what this entire recipe is dedicated to! The core principles for elevating a jarred marinara into a fantastic **homemade meat sauce** are: always add fresh aromatics like onion and garlic, boost the flavor with a robust **Italian seasoning** blend and other spices (salt, pepper, red pepper flakes), incorporate Italian sausage for richness and pre-seasoned flavor, and consider a splash of acidic brine (from pepperoncinis or olives) for complexity. Full step-by-step instructions with all the secret ingredients and tips are detailed in the post above and the recipe card below, explaining the “why” behind each delicious upgrade.

brown bowl of spaghetti noodles with easy homemade sauce on top, garnished with basil and parmesan.

Ingredients

For the Sauce

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 2 teaspoons Italian seasoning, or more to taste
  • 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 6 cloves garlic, smashed and minced (about 2 tablespoons)
  • 1 pound mild Italian sausage, bulk (or remove casings)
  • 28 ounce can marinara sauce, I like Rao’s sauce, but any brand will do
  • 15 ounce can crushed tomatoes, or petite diced tomatoes, with juice
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon Better Than Bouillon Beef Base

To serve:

  • 1 pound dry spaghetti noodles
  • water, to boil
  • 2 tablespoons kosher salt, to season water
  • fresh basil or parsley, to garnish (optional)
  • parmesan cheese, grated (optional)

Instructions

  • In a large Dutch oven or soup pot, heat 2 tablespoons olive oil over medium heat. Add 1 chopped onion and all the spices: 1 teaspoon kosher salt, 2 teaspoons Italian seasoning, 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper, and 1/4 teaspoon black pepper.
  • Sauté the onions and spices for about 5 minutes, until the onion starts to turn translucent and fragrant.
  • Smash, peel, and mince 6 cloves of garlic (this should yield about 1-2 tablespoons). For added ease, you can certainly use pre-minced garlic from a jar for this recipe.
  • Add the minced garlic to the pan with the onions, adding a bit more oil if the pan appears dry. Sauté for about 1 minute, until the garlic is wonderfully fragrant but not scorched.
  • Add 1 pound Italian sausage (if using links, remove casings). Break up the sausage with a wooden spoon and cook for 3-5 minutes until it is fully browned. You can drain off some of the excess grease if preferred, though a moderate amount adds flavor.
  • Pour in the 28-ounce jar of marinara sauce and the 15-ounce can of crushed tomatoes (or petite diced tomatoes, including their juice). Turn the heat up to medium-high to bring the mixture to a simmer.
  • Add 1 cup of water to your empty marinara jar, shake it vigorously to clean out any remaining sauce, then pour this into the empty crushed tomato can to rinse it as well. Add this flavorful water mixture to your spaghetti sauce.
  • Stir in 2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar and 1 teaspoon Better Than Bouillon Beef Base.
  • Once the sauce begins to bubble, reduce the heat to medium or medium-low to maintain a gentle simmer. Continue simmering for about 10-30 minutes, depending on the time you have available.
  • The longer the sauce simmers, the thicker and more flavorful it will become as liquid evaporates. If you plan to simmer for an extended period (beyond 30 minutes), add 1/4 cup of water at a time every half hour or so to maintain desired consistency. Even a 10-minute simmer results in a delicious sauce, perfect for busy weeknights!

To serve:

  • Approximately 10 minutes before you’re ready to eat, start cooking your spaghetti. In a separate large pot, bring several quarts of water to a rolling boil. Season the water generously with salt until it tastes like the ocean (about 2 tablespoons kosher salt). Add 16 ounces of dry spaghetti noodles and stir well to prevent sticking. Continue stirring occasionally for 8-9 minutes, or until the pasta is cooked al dente. Avoid overcooking!
  • Drain the cooked pasta and toss it with a small amount of olive oil to prevent clumping. Plate the pasta and top generously with the homemade spaghetti sauce. Garnish with fresh basil or parsley and grated Parmesan cheese, if desired. You can also add the pasta directly into the pot with the sauce and toss to combine, allowing guests (or children!) to choose their preferred sauce-to-noodle ratio.
  • Serve this incredible meal with One Hour French Bread, or store-bought Italian bread toasted with plenty of butter, salt, and garlic powder for an extra treat. A Caesar salad kit (Costco’s is highly recommended!) makes the perfect easy accompaniment for a complete and satisfying meal!

Slow Cooker Instructions

  • Follow the recipe as stated through cooking the Italian sausage. Once the sausage is browned, transfer all the cooked onions and sausage to a crock pot. Add the remaining sauce ingredients (marinara sauce, can of tomatoes, water, balsamic vinegar, and beef base) and stir to combine. Cook on high for 3 hours or on low for 5-7 hours, as preferred. Prepare the spaghetti noodles on the stove when you’re ready to serve.
