Crafting the Flawless BLT

Get ready to assemble the ultimate BLT sandwich! While it might seem like a simple creation, mastering the BLT is an art. Forget soggy bread or bland fillings – this guide unveils the secrets to crafting a perfectly toasted, crispy, yet tender, juicy, and utterly irresistible Bacon, Lettuce, and Tomato sandwich, elevated with the creamy touch of avocado. Prepare yourself for a sandwich experience that redefines perfection.

how to make a BLT with bacon, lettuce, tomato, mayo, and avocado

My husband, Eric, often reminisces about his college days and the legendary “Sandwich Club” he founded with his friend, Brian. This exclusive club, boasting a membership of exactly two, dedicated itself to the noble pursuit of sandwich perfection. Their activities revolved around meticulous sandwich making, strategic ingredient shopping, and the audacious creation of new, delectable combinations. The challenge? One sandwich was never quite enough for two hungry college boys, but two was just too much. Their ingenious solution: a grand total of three sandwiches per meeting, perfectly portioned for one and a half each.

The Sandwich Club had one final, unwritten objective: to double its membership. This mission was successfully achieved when Eric and Brian met my roommate, Sarah, and me. We, too, shared a profound love for sandwiches. And so, we rode off into the sunset, our journey fueled by carefully packed sandwiches, of course. My roots, you see, are firmly planted in the glorious world of sandwiches.

This enduring passion for all things sandwiched brings us to today’s masterpiece: the BLT. You might wonder if a BLT truly warrants an entire dedicated recipe. My answer is an emphatic YES! This seemingly simple sandwich holds profound culinary secrets, and I’m here to unveil them so you can create the best BLT of your life. Let’s delve into the crucial components that transform a basic BLT into an extraordinary experience.

BLT sandwich with mayo, lettuce, tomato, bacon, and avocado

A BLT, at its heart, is a minimalist marvel. With so few ingredients, the quality of each element becomes paramount. Every component must be exceptional to achieve a truly memorable flavor profile. Let’s break down each key player.

The Foundation: Perfect Bread

The bread is the unsung hero of any sandwich, and the BLT is no exception. For the ultimate BLT, I strongly advocate for a hearty yet soft white bread. Many might argue for a robust French or Italian loaf to withstand the juicy tomato, but I respectfully disagree. Those artisan crusts are often too chewy, creating an unpleasantly tough first bite. What you need is a tender, yielding crust that bites easily, allowing the flavors of the fillings to shine without resistance. This is a similar philosophy to my recipe for the Best French Toast, where a tender crust is key.

But we’re not just slapping ingredients onto plain bread. Oh no, we’re elevating it! The secret lies in buttering each side generously and lightly toasting it in a skillet. Yes, this adds a few calories, but the unparalleled flavor and texture it imparts are worth every single one. Butter truly does make everything better! While a skillet provides superior control for that perfect golden hue, you can achieve a similar result by lightly toasting dry bread in a toaster and then spreading it with butter immediately after it pops out.

The key here is *light* toasting. We’re aiming for a delicate golden touch, not a dark, crispy crunch. Over-toasting can lead to bread that shatters into a crumbly mess, irritating the roof of your mouth, or worse, becoming rock-hard and difficult to eat. A light toast creates a subtle barrier, preventing the bread from dissolving into a soggy tragedy, while adding just enough structural integrity and a gentle crunch to complement the other ingredients. Trust me, a soft, lightly toasted interior with a hint of crispness is the ideal foundation for your magnificent BLT.

The Unifying Element: The Perfect Sauce

Mayonnaise. Let me declare it once more: mayonnaise is arguably the greatest gift to the condiment world. Its creamy texture, smooth consistency, and perfectly tart flavor make it the ultimate sealant and flavor enhancer for countless sandwiches, and the BLT is a prime example. It acts as a protective layer against juicy ingredients, preventing sogginess, and binding all the flavors together in a harmonious embrace.

You might think there is too much mayo on this bread. You are wrong.

If you consider yourself “not a mayonnaise person,” I urge you to reconsider, especially for a BLT. However, if traditional mayo simply isn’t your preference, there are fantastic alternatives that build upon its creamy base, often with exciting flavor twists. It’s time to explore and potentially convert!

Explore These Exciting BLT Sauce Variations:

  • Garlic Aioli: For those who love a robust garlic flavor, homemade Garlic Aioli is a game-changer. It’s essentially mayonnaise elevated with fresh garlic and a bright squeeze of lemon, adding a sophisticated depth.
  • Balsamic Mayo: Whisk 2 tablespoons of good quality mayonnaise with 1 tablespoon of a rich Balsamic Reduction. The sweet and tangy notes of balsamic beautifully complement the savory bacon and fresh tomato. Alternatively, drizzle balsamic reduction directly onto your assembled BLT for an elegant finish.
  • Dijon or French’s Infused Mayo: If you enjoy a subtle kick, combine 2 tablespoons of mayonnaise with 1/2 to 1 tablespoon of your preferred mustard (Dijon or classic yellow). This adds a gentle tang and spice without overwhelming the classic BLT profile.
  • Sriracha Mayo: For a delicious heat, mix 2 teaspoons of Sriracha with 2 tablespoons of mayonnaise, adjusting the ratio to your desired spice level. This vibrant, spicy mayo adds an exciting dimension.
  • Classic Fry Sauce: A beloved condiment, often made from equal parts ketchup and mayonnaise, offers a sweet and savory creaminess that can surprisingly enhance a BLT.
  • Herby Ranch Mayo: Stir 2 tablespoons of mayonnaise with 1 tablespoon of creamy Buttermilk Ranch Dressing. A sprinkle of fresh dill on your sandwich would take this flavor combination over the top.
  • Simple Garlic Sour Cream Sauce: A lighter, tangy alternative could be a mix of 1/4 cup mayonnaise, 2 tablespoons sour cream, 2 tablespoons mustard, and 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder. This provides creaminess with a zesty, garlicky punch.
  • Chipotle Mayo: For a smoky, spicy, and incredibly creamy experience, try my recent Chipotle Mayo recipe. Its depth of flavor from chipotles in adobo makes it perfect for adding a gourmet twist to your BLT.

The Crisp Component: Fresh Lettuce

The choice of lettuce in your BLT dictates the overall crunch factor, a crucial element for textural balance. My personal favorite is green leaf lettuce. It offers a pleasant crispness without being so overwhelming that you lose the ability to hear your dining companions when you bite into your sandwich. Its vibrant green also adds an inviting visual appeal. Romaine lettuce is an excellent second choice, providing a slightly firmer crunch. In a pinch, classic iceberg lettuce will certainly deliver that refreshing crispness, though with less nuanced flavor.

Ensure your lettuce is thoroughly washed and patted dry before assembling. Excess moisture can quickly lead to a soggy sandwich. Layer the lettuce strategically on top of the mayonnaise-spread bread; the mayo acts as a barrier, protecting the bread from the tomato’s juices and keeping your lettuce crisp until the very last bite.

The Heart: Juicy Tomato

Arguably, the tomato is the most vital component of a BLT, and it’s also where things can go terribly wrong. There’s nothing more disappointing than a pale, flavorless, mostly pink tomato. Truly, a BLT lives or dies by its tomato. If you don’t have access to high-quality, perfectly ripe tomatoes, I recommend waiting until peak summer season or, better yet, growing your own. Homegrown tomatoes possess an unparalleled sweetness and juiciness that store-bought varieties often can’t match.

For optimal flavor and texture, choose vine-ripe, Beefsteak, or Heirloom tomatoes. Regardless of the variety, ensure it’s perfectly ripe – bright red, fragrant, and bursting with juice. My top tip for the best BLT tomato preparation is to slice it about 3/8 inch thick (thicker than a quarter inch, but just shy of half an inch). Then, lay the slices on paper towels for a few minutes. This simple step allows the paper towels to absorb some of the excess juice, making the tomato more manageable within the sandwich and further preventing sogginess without sacrificing its inherent juiciness.

Crucially, before you close your sandwich, you *must* season your tomato slices with a sprinkle of salt and freshly ground black pepper. This simple step awakens and intensifies the tomato’s natural sweetness and acidity, transforming it from merely good to truly spectacular. A BLT without properly seasoned tomatoes is simply incomplete.

The Crispy Star: Abundant Bacon

When it comes to bacon in a BLT, there is one non-negotiable rule: there must be an abundance of it. This is not the time to be frugal! Pile it high for maximum flavor and texture in every bite.

How to Make the best BLT!

My second crucial rule for BLT bacon is to use thin-cut slices. While I adore thick-cut bacon alongside my breakfast eggs, it presents a challenge in a BLT. You want bacon that shatters with a satisfying crunch, not a chewy slab that requires effort to bite through. Thin-cut bacon, when cooked to perfection, offers that exquisite crispy texture without compromising the integrity of the sandwich. To achieve the desired bacon-to-sandwich ratio, simply add more layers of thin-cut bacon instead of opting for fewer, thicker slices. This principle is similar to how I approach my Smashburgers: two thinner, crispy patties are often superior to one large, thick one.

For the easiest and cleanest cooking method, I highly recommend baking your bacon. This method results in consistently crispy bacon with minimal mess. Cook it until it’s perfectly crisp but not burnt – a delicate balance that allows it to shatter beautifully when bitten into. Once cooked, transfer the bacon to a paper towel-lined plate to absorb any excess grease, then break each slice in half for easier layering and more even distribution within your sandwich. Keep it warm until assembly time.

The Unofficial Upgrade: Creamy Avocado

Confession time: this isn’t strictly a BLT anymore, not in the purest, traditional sense. But embrace modernity! Avocados are now readily available, and their creamy, rich texture adds an unparalleled dimension to this classic. Consider this an evolution, not a betrayal. While we’ll stick with the classic “BLT” moniker for simplicity, know in your heart that a ripe, luscious avocado is the secret, unspoken ingredient that elevates it to extraordinary. Perhaps we can call it a BLTA or BLAT, but for now, let’s agree that avocado is a welcome and essential addition.

Ensure your avocado is perfectly ripe—soft to the touch but not mushy. Slice it thinly and layer it generously over your crispy bacon. A light sprinkle of salt and pepper on the avocado will further enhance its flavor and bring out its natural creaminess. This addition provides a contrasting cool, smooth texture that balances the crispness of the bacon and lettuce, and the juicy tang of the tomato, truly making for a more complex and satisfying bite.

Finally, complete your masterpiece by spreading the second toasted slice of bread with a generous amount of mayonnaise or your chosen sauce. Gently place it on top of your meticulously layered creation.

The very last, crucial step: gently press down on the top slice of bread to compress the layers slightly, then slice the sandwich in half using a sharp serrated knife. Whether you prefer triangles or rectangles is entirely up to you – I’ve offered enough bossy advice for one day! But do slice it, unless you possess the jaw-unhinging capabilities of a snake. This sandwich is meant to be devoured immediately, ensuring every element is at its peak freshness and texture.

Elevate Your BLT: Next-Level Variations

While my tips are designed to guide you to BLT perfection, remember that this is *your* sandwich. Feel free to experiment and customize it to your heart’s desire. Here are some fantastic additions and variations to take your BLT to the next level:

  • Add a Fried Egg: Transform your BLT into a hearty breakfast or brunch sandwich with a perfectly cooked fried egg, its runny yolk adding an extra layer of richness.
  • Fresh Sprouts: For an earthy, fresh crunch and added nutrients, a handful of alfalfa or clover sprouts can be a delightful addition.
  • Pickled Cherry Peppers: Introduce a tangy, slightly spicy, and vibrant burst of flavor with thinly sliced pickled cherry peppers.
  • Roasted Red Pepper: Sweet and smoky roasted red peppers offer a different kind of depth and juiciness.
  • Pimiento Cheese: Replace the mayonnaise with creamy, zesty Pimiento Cheese. This Southern staple will deliver an irresistible savory punch.
  • Cheese, glorious Cheese: While a classic BLT typically goes without, a slice of cheese can be a wonderful addition. Try sharp cheddar, creamy feta, mild provolone, tangy goat cheese, buttery Muenster, or fresh mozzarella for varied flavor profiles.
  • Fried Green Tomatoes: For a Southern-inspired twist, substitute fresh tomatoes with crispy, tangy fried green tomatoes.
  • Thinly Sliced Radishes: Add a peppery bite and a beautiful pop of color with a few thin slices of radish.

As a fun throwback, I must share a picture from my very first BLT post back in 2012. It was actually a BLAT (Bacon, Lettuce, Avocado, Tomato) featuring my Garlic Aioli and a sprinkle of feta cheese, all nestled between slices of incredible Focaccia Bread. While I believe a BLT doesn’t strictly *need* cheese, I certainly wouldn’t turn down some feta on my sandwich!

And of course, no BLT discussion on my blog would be complete without this iconic quote: “True love is the greatest thing in the world!…Except for a nice MLT. A mutton lettuce and tomato sandwich, where the mutton is nice and leeean, and the tomato is ripe…they’re so perky! I love that.” Can you name that classic movie?

I will show you exactly how to make the best BLT sandwich of your life! Sometimes the simplest recipes are the easiest to mess up. Nobody wants a soggy sandwich, or one that is flavorless and bland! I will show you all the tips and tricks you need to make a perfectly toasted, crispy-yet-tender, juicy and drippy avocado Bacon Lettuce and Tomato Sandwich.

Equipment

  • Skillet

Ingredients

  • 2
    slices

    thick slices hearty white bread
  • 4
    teaspoons
    butter,
    soft
  • 3
    tablespoons

    mayonnaise OR other sauce*
  • 4
    slices

    thin cut bacon
  • 2-4
    pieces

    green leaf lettuce
  • 1

    perfectly ripe tomato
  • 1/2

    perfectly ripe avocado
  • salt and pepper

Instructions

  1. Begin by frying your bacon. For easier cleanup and consistent crispiness, I highly recommend baking your bacon. Cook until it’s perfectly crispy, but be careful not to overcook it. Once done, remove the bacon to a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess grease. Tear each cooked slice of bacon in half, yielding 8 strips in total. Keep warm until you’re ready to assemble your sandwich.
  2. While the bacon is cooking, prepare your bread. Spread an even layer of butter on both sides of each slice. Place the buttered bread in a skillet over medium heat and toast lightly. This should only take a couple of minutes per side. Flip each piece and toast the other side until it achieves a nice, light golden-brown color. The goal is a delicate browning, not a deep toast. (As an alternative, you can lightly toast your bread in a conventional toaster and then immediately spread butter on each side.) Set the toasted bread aside.
  3. Wash and thoroughly dry your green leaf lettuce. Slice your ripe tomato into rounds, approximately 3/8 inch thick. Place the tomato slices on a paper towel-lined plate for several minutes to absorb some of their natural juices. This step is crucial for preventing a soggy sandwich.
  4. Halve your perfectly ripe avocado, remove the pit, and then slice one half into even strips.
  5. Now, assemble your masterpiece: Spread about 1 and 1/2 tablespoons of mayonnaise (or your chosen sauce*) onto one side of a toasted bread slice. Layer the lettuce fronds evenly over the mayonnaise. Next, add 2 slices of your drained tomato. Generously sprinkle the tomato slices with salt and freshly ground black pepper.
  6. Pile all 8 half-strips of crispy bacon on top of the tomato. Do not be shy with the bacon!
  7. Arrange the avocado strips over the bacon. If desired, sprinkle the avocado with a little extra salt and pepper for enhanced flavor.
  8. Spread the remaining toasted bread slice with mayonnaise or your preferred sauce. Place it on top of your assembled sandwich and gently press down to unify the layers. Using a sharp serrated knife, carefully slice the sandwich in half. This recipe yields one truly amazing sandwich. Enjoy it immediately for the best experience!

Notes

*Instead of plain mayonnaise, consider using Garlic Aioli, Chipotle Mayo, or Sriracha mayo for exciting flavor variations. Refer to the full article above for many more creative sauce ideas!
